BACKGROUND OF OUR RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION
The Nagara Dhamma
Temple, Inc. is a Buddhist temple established as a nonprofit
religious organization in 1988. Our temple holds tax-exempt
status from the Internal Revenue Service under Section 501(c) of
the Internal Revenue Code. Our temple has assets of approximately
200 families in our Buddhist community, ministered to by four
resident monks of the Thai Buddhist denomination.
We are affiliated
with the Thai Buddhist religion and the abbot of this temple is
authorized by the Supreme Sangha Council in Thailand to perform
religious activities. The Supreme Sangha Council holds unchallenged
influence in all matters relating to the practice and propagation
of Buddhism in Thailand. All Thai Buddhist monks are under its
ecclesiastical control. The Royal Thai Government’s Department of
Religious affairs takes its lead from the Supreme Sangha Council
in determining the qualification of a particular monk to perform
religious functions as an ordained member of the Thai Buddhist
clergy.
In Thai Buddhism, an
ordained monk is authorized to perform all religious functions
relating to marriages, funerals, blessings, ministering religious
services, and preaching. A monk may be ordained by an abbot only
after service as a novice or acolyte in a temple and several years
concentrated study under the abbot of the temple and at a Thai
Buddhist seminary.
Our temple supports
the monks to perform all religious functions at our temple
relating to marriages, funerals, ministering religious services,
and preaching. This work would include mission activity at
related Thai Buddhist temples in California and other states.
